AWS announces 40% price reduction for Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) Cold HDD (sc1) volumes

Posted on: Nov 9, 2020

Today, we are reducing the price of Amazon EBS Cold HDD (sc1) volumes by 40%, or an estimated $160 for each 16TB sc1 volume.

EBS sc1 volumes provide low-cost magnetic storage that defines performance in terms of throughput rather than IOPS. With a lower throughput limit than Throughput Optimized HDD (st1) volumes, sc1 is a good fit for large, sequential cold-data workloads including Hadoop clusters, Windows File Server, log processing and big data workloads with large data sets.

EBS sc1 volumes offer sustained, baseline throughput of 12 MB/s per TB and a maximum baseline throughput per volume of 192 MB/s. EBS sc1 volumes are backed by Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and provide the lowest cost per GB of all EBS volume types. Similar to st1 volumes, sc1 volumes provide a burst model; they can burst up to 80 MB/s per TB and up to 250 MB/s per volume.

Amazon EBS customers automatically benefit from this new lower price, which is effective starting November 9th, 2020. New pricing applies to all AWS Regions where Amazon EBS is available. To learn more, see the Amazon EBS pricing page.
