AWS Storage Gateway adds Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering for File Gateway

Posted on: Apr 30, 2020

AWS Storage Gateway now supports Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering as a storage class for File Gateway, enabling you to optimize storage costs automatically when data access patterns change, without impacting performance or incurring operational overhead. This eliminates the challenge of needing to have a deep understanding of your on-premises users and applications’ data access patterns.

File Gateway provides on-premises applications with file-based, cached access to virtually unlimited cloud storage using SMB and NFS protocols. With this launch, you can now select Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering as a storage class when you set up file shares on your File Gateway. Configuring File Gateway to store data to Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering delivers automatic cost savings by moving data between two tiers, frequent access and infrequent access, when access patterns change. It is ideal for workloads with access patterns that change frequently, or where the data is accessed by many applications with varying access patterns.

This capability is available on new gateways starting today in every Region where AWS Storage Gateway is available and for existing gateways it will be made available through a software update by May 30, 2020. Step-by-step instructions are located in the AWS Storage Gateway User Guide. Please visit the Amazon S3 page for details about storage class options and pricing information.
